Abstract
The AC-excitation Synchronous Condenser (AC SynCon) is an active support device for the new power system. It has been demonstrated to offer significant advantages in addressing issues such as the system's low inertia characteristics and insufficient dynamic voltage support capability. In response to the control requirements of this particular condenser, the adoption of voltage source control presents the challenge of ensuring that the rotational speed of the unit does not exceed pre-defined limits. The present study proposes an enhanced VSG control methodology founded upon the AC SynCon, designated as the inertia-supported virtual synchronous generator (IS-VSG). In order to verify the effectiveness of this method, a regional power grid simulation system containing the AC SynCon was built on the Matlab/Simulink platform. The obtained findings reveal that the IS-VSG control is able to reliably offer inertia support targeting the power grid’s frequency, thereby circumventing the instability issue engendered by continuous support. Moreover, the implementation of this approach does not result in any adverse effects on the reactive power support capabilities.
